Islen - Zeit-Insel am Mellenbach
A completely natural experience
On the banks of the Mellenbach stands a wooden house of exceptional beauty. This is Islen, built by carpenter Michael Kaufmann. In German, Islen means an island on the riverbed. The house is in fact an island of time, where you can while away precious days drinking in the view of the Kanisfluh mountain range and listening to the whispering of the stream. The house is constructed entirely of native spruce, and is split into two separate accommodation units. The scent of the timber, and that of the forest outside, permeate the house, making occupants feel at one with their surroundings. It is the perfect place to find inner peace.
Where traditional craft shapes modern design
The Bregenzerwald region is renowned for the quality of its craftsmanship and Michael Kaufmann is one of its leading figures. The Kaufmann family business has for decades been building houses which represent the very best in efficiency, ecology and architecture. Islen utilises the latest technology, known as TINN, in modular solid wood construction.
Where architecture meets nature
Islen is the first of a planned complex of holiday homes and represents a milestone in innovative timber construction. This family-owned property is an island of relaxation for families, and for all nature lovers looking for peace and beauty. Located on the riverbank amid traditional timber houses, it offers stunning views of meadows and mountaintops.

Be embraced by nature
Fetch breakfast locally on foot, build dams in the riverbed, watch the animals grazing close by, learn your neighbour’s gardening secrets and follow the course of the sun along a cliff edge: at Islen, all this suddenly becomes your main focus. TV? WiFi? The house has that too, but you might find that these things become far less important.
