Islen - Zeit-Insel am Mellenbach

In a country renowned for its architecture, Islen pushes the boundary between technology and design. In collaboration with architect Johannes Kaufmann, the team has developed an easily repeated concept that can be built quickly and efficiently. All aspects of Islen complement each other, from furniture arrangement to interior design and construction materials. Everything is designed by expert craftsmen and built from native resources.

Innovation in practice

For many years, Michael Kaufmann has been one of the leading figures in the ecological construction of module systems for timber houses. His team’s latest invention is TINN, developed in collaboration with architect Johannes Kaufmann. After being constructed in its entirety in the carpenter’s workshop, the unit is transferred by crane to a prefabricated foundation.

Timber construction and ecology

It was of the utmost importance to the designers of Islen that the materials should be chemical-free, the house should be breathable, and the resources should be used as efficiently as possibly. The construction materials are locally sourced and natural. The house’s personality shines through every delicately manufactured detail.

Werkraum Bregenzerwald

All the companies involved in the construction of Islen, from upholstery to housing technology, are members of Werkraum Bregenzerwald, a regional association for innovative craft and trade. The association’s exhibition venue in Andelsbuch makes a fascinating day trip.
